Elemental

I need a new meditation
Will you go with me there?
A time, a place, a memory
Not cherished near enough
Wide eyed awe and wonder
At the magic of drawn breath
Of tiny hands and fingers
High fives in stretch and yawn
Subtle silken suction
Of a meal that's all but done
Ripples pulsing at the throat
While eylids are surrendering
Bonnet, bows tickle the nose
Welded cheek to cheek
Ancient rythms bounce and sway
May share this nap in the middle of the day

I remember after all these years
The sparkle in my infant's tears
Hands pressed upon each cheek
Fastened eye to eye
The struggle to hold all of my attention
Answers to layered questions why

So soon they say goodbye

But for now
With eyes closed
I scent again baby smells
The wind whispers secrets
And I the child
Cuddle children
Again

  • Saw your link on another poets page and thought I would pop over and read. I like the beginning. Seems like you have more than one poem in the works here.

    Ah ...

This is totally beautiful ... I have five children (plus one added daughter!) of my own but no grandchildren (yet ) ... and I absolutely adored every minute of caring and loving them. And: I myself put on Baby Dream fragrance when I go to bed at night to sleep in a soft fragrance of innocence ... Ah. That powdery smell ... and soft gurgles of happiness and of love ...

Do you know, Poet, I think no matter what we become, inside we stay the little innocent babes of God's Universe ...

Thank you for a lovely poem to wake up to. Only a very special man can write on this topic with such honesty and tenderness.

    Love
    Myra

what a gorgeous visual image you have conjured in my mind and with such detail! This is such a beautiful sentiment. I enjoyed this. - NANGALEEMA

This of course brought back memories of my own and now it is only exposed in grandchildren. I have raised two sets of my own so far apart in years that it would be silly to explain. My nine year old is still coming down at four am to snugle with me. I know she will out grow this very soon and it will be gone forever. I treasure each moment of it for now. RC

Hey dude. Hope you are well. think of you lots. I love your work. Read your ascent to being human... My brotherinlaw is a retired English prof. He loved the used car analogies. best part of the poem. I don't have ex wives, by the way. Never wanted one! Plan A worked 30 years, and we are forming planB! No one can hep Al Gore. I was just saying, for some readers, Lock Box was going to be a distraction, and you don't want that if you can help it. I tell poets if a word feels like a "pothole" to me.

How funny! The same title! Yours about your child as an infant while mine's about the soul. Very elemental!

    I loved it

This poem touched my heart and I really enjoyed reading it...I am 16 and I have raised more kids than any person I know...and right now I am raising 4...I love watching them grow but it makes me sad that when they get older they wont be so dependent on me...But I enjoyed your write its very good

I really enjoyed reading this piece.
The last stanza stood out the most for me! I think this poem is really beautiful and is a different take from the picture than most, it decribes how you remember your children being young then they have left, yet, you can sit and still smell the baby scent.

    Beautiful<3

thank you for entering and good luck...xxx
