I had a devil of a dream,
the kind that makes you want to scream,
so turn the page if you are wise,
or else these words might burn your eyes.
Abe Lincoln sat upon my bed,
was tapping me on my forehead,
he said, "You've got one gnarly snore!
The devil's knocking at your door."
I burped and said, "Imagine that!"
He frowned and tipped his stovepipe hat.
"Well, take a wander to the door,
and find out what he's knocking for."
I shook the whole way, heart a-throb,
and put my hand upon the knob.
When Abe yelled out, "You stupid shit!
Don't be a fool, don't open it!"
So, I just stopped and said, "Who's there?"
then waited in the still night air.
The devil said, "I came to see
how is it that you feel for me?"
I asked the devil, "Are you dense?
You are not making any sense!"
I stood in fright, the clock struck four.
He said, "It's you that I adore."
I looked at Abe to get a queue,
he shrugged, and didn't have a clue.
Just then I heard the devil say,
"You'll have your list by New Year's Day!"
By now my brain's on overload,
and heart is set in panic mode.
I yelled out loudly, "Why this jest?"
He said, "I think you are the best."
So, now I thought it was a hoax,
put on by somewhat impish folks.
The devil then said bashfully,
"I hope you don't give up on me."
I turned the doorknob, it unlatched,
as dead bolt slid until detached.
I hope your ready for a scare;
I opened up to NO ONE THERE!
I stood and looked for quite some time,
until I heard the dawn bells chime.
You know I wouldn't lead you on,
there was no sign of where he'd gone.
Then I was gasping, trying to scream,
I woke up it was just a dream!
The bed was smooth where Abe had been,
the door was shut the deadbolt pinned.
So, I was left there wondering,
what was, exactly, happening?
The words were so familiar,
(although still most peculiar).
So, just up from sleep of the dead,
I dragged my carcass out of bed,
I knew just what I had to do;
the door swung open, I found....
To be continued...
…or not.

I wonder what Freud would say bout this one?

This is great - sounds like a nonsensical dream but I have to agree with what Lyndon said lol.

Freud? Three things. You want a lover.
You have an obsession with historical figures, males, really. You dream that you have dreams and then reality sinks in and your dream wakes up but you do not.
Prescription: Do not read before going to bed.I guess we all had a devil of a time reading this and a devil of a time figuring it out.

The rhyme does help the narrative. [If you look for typos, you will find 'em!]
Thank you for a jolly old time!
Lyndon of the Winklings. :f :) :f

Ha ha ha. Thank you. I found the typo. This was not really a dream. These were all things a woman has actually said to me and then disappeared each time afterwards. Obviously, she has problems with the truth, so I made her the devil. Ha ha ha.

Clever with a capitol C. Very funny, too, although I am not sure if humor is what you were going with here
I would have to say that Freud would be the one on the couch and you, behind the note pad
You are brilliant.
Love, Lane

I laughed till I cried all through writing it. I was going for funny. The alternative is too sad.

Very interesting dream. I liked the way this piece ended. It peaks curiosity and leaves me wondering what will happen next. I liked the flow of this piece, as well. Thanks for sharing and best of luck in the contest.
