Mice running in circles
colliding with walls,
looking for pathways
that no longer exist.
Conditioned by instinct,
ways are easily lost
in confusing landscapes
that constantly change.
Doorways and exits,
never the same,
too late to go back
if wrong turn taken.
Compulsion for life
deeply ingrained,
mistakes are made
but spirit never gives up.

Superb
Ah, sounds like a good description of the condition of many humans today. So much change, due to gentrification, is taking place; displacing families, neighborhoods, and friends; who knows what's happening. It's like sooner or later we'll all end up being lost in a maze without any familiar landmarks within our cities 'cause so much of possible historical value is being torn down and possibly discarded without any thought of historic preservation.
Why must we destroy what many individuals and families value just so a few can make profits? A most excellent write, indeed.

Thank you so much 'Clovis6790..' for reading, your wonderful comment and clappies on 'running in circles'. I appreciate it and am pleased you enjoyed this.
Yes, I think for many humans it's become a way of life, unfortunately. And towns/neighborhoods do change so much over time (I wrote on this - 'main street' - where when one goes back 'home', really all that's left are the memories....and I am right now in the middle of a move that took me back 'home' - only it no longer felt like home).
I live in an 1800's 'town brothel'....lol....have owned a Civil War home, this brothel, another 1800's home also - I am drawn to the older homes and their individual charms and architecture.
Again, thanks.

Haha...this is so cool!
Yep...I can definitely relate.
I love the metaphor here. Isn't it wonderful how you can write a poem, never mention humans at all, and yet we internalize the poem and its message to fit us?
I have this thing about stairways...I always count every step, especially ones I go up and down often...because I'm convinced one day I'll be going down steps in the dark and someone is going to add one extra, just to see me fall flat on my face! LOL I don't know why...but your poem makes me think of that.
Thanks so much for your entry, and best of luck to you!

P.S. If you "aren't sure what this is", I'd call it..."a really good poem".
