Is very unhealthy for our bods.
And that may be true but I say
It is the nectar of the gods!
It made the U.S. great and strong.
There just ain't no doubt about it.
I don't know one American mom
Who can get along without it.
My mom must have made a million
PB&J sandwiches when I was a boy.
Heck, PB&J might as well stand for
"Peace, beauty and joy."
Long ago, back in grade school,
I used to share my peanut butter
With my childhood sweetheart,
My young heart all aflutter.
I'd sit as close as possible
And talk about toys and school
As I gazed at her with doe eyes
While struggling to look cool.
She was blonde and freckled
And her name was Linda Coss.
I don't remember much anymore
Except that she was "boss".
And though in the game of love,
Back then, I was just a beginner,
To this day, I've never had
A more romantic dinner.
Author notes
For all you young'uns, "Boss" is a word that didn't quite make it to modern times. It was the equivalent of "da bomb" way back when.
This would be a blend of options 1 and 2, I think. A romantic meal (though not sensuous, because I was just a boy) AND the best food ever (which it still is.)

hehe
thats cute, and still true today. theres just nothing like a god ole fashion PB&J sandwich. but its even better when you get to share it with that special someone.

-
This is so enjoyable on several levels; the childhood memories, the first blush of romance (regardless of age) and of course, the praise of PB&J - one of my fave dinners to this day
Good stuff (the poem too
! Good luck in your contest!

individuality,
That is a great line - "Let's build a shrine to peanut butter and dance in the street of love and life." Reading that line alone made writing the poem worthwhile.
Thanks,
Mark

I remember the adjective "boss." It didn't last very long - either did "twitchen" which was a cleaned up version of "bitchen" - which parents thought was a dirty word.

This is a very cleverly written poem. The rhyming and meter is quite good and I really like the way you did the "PB&J" thing. Peace, Beauty and Joy is a sneaky title!

Lovespell,
Except for a few poems with adult language (usually political ones), I try to write in a wholesome way. There's enough of the other kind. Thanks for noticing. I'm glad you enjoyed the poem.

lol A bit like 'vegemite' here in Australia but I for one cannot abide peanut butter lol...think it comes from a mother who ate it for breakfast every morning!!! Sick of the sight and smell of it all!

Cannonsfire,
I know exactly what you mean. As much as I love to eat peanut butter, I can't stand the smell of someone else eating it! Isn't that weird? I don't think that's true of any other food. It's one of those unfathomable mysteries, I suppose. lol

What an adorable poem! I loved every bit of it! Flowed great and rhyme scheme was wonderful.
-
Hey mark! Since I'm much older and sophristicated, I now take my peanut butter on celery sticks! That fixes that healthy problem! One of my pastors who died way to soon, made his bride cry when he sat down to her first dinner, and popped up to bring back a jar! It didn't seem to matter that he ate pb with every meal!
Come see some of my new stuff. -
-
Ah man, the bread is the second best part! I've tried peanut butter on celery and carrots but it just doesn't do it for me. Hilarious story about your pastor. I'm almost that bad. I've been known to spread peanut butter on cake.
I'm leaving work now (which I've been avoiding doing) but will definitely check out your new stuff this weekend. Sorry for falling off the earth.

whimsical, yet reaching for the heart of childhood. I like it, and totally understand the romance of sharing with the loved one - any food, in that situation, becomes a feast.

Dear Mark
I think I used peanut butter for a busted dowel in this desk. It's just fine!
My favorite PB application has got to be PB on waffles w/bananas, and w/honey. I think IHOP is coming out with a rendition of that, should have patented it!
Nice poem Mark! Good to see you doing some good work.
Be smooth, avoid the crunch!

I was actually changing my name on here and went through all I needed to do to get it done except "submit" and when I did it, it told me it was taken so I had to think fast, and it was breakfast time. And here I am a Blue Plate Breakfast Special w/ a pen!
LOL -
Hey John,
I didn't recognize you with the new name. Where did Three Egg Omelet come from, pray tell? lol Waffles, PB, bananas and honey sounds awesome. I'll have to try that when I'm ready to starve myself for a week afterward to burn off the calories. haha The "It must be jelly . . ." line is one of my all-time favorites. Ya gotta stick with the classics.
Have a great holiday weekend, bro. Must be nice being in Vegas, where everybody else wants to be and has to drive 500 miles to get to!

As a Nana, I'm rediscovering that PB&J is one of the 4 basic food groups. This poem is a breezy, uplifting read taking us back to childhood, puppy love and our whole lives in front of us. BTW, your avatar is totally Boss!

nichtmich,
Thanks! In case you haven't seen it yet, that's a clip from The Big Lebowski, one of my favorite movies. (Be prepared to hear the F word about 700 times, but it's hilarious.) I still eat way too much PB for my much slower metabolism. I'll have to grow up one of these days. On second thought, naahhh! lol
-
-
o how i like this poem and i love the picture. It makes me smile and remember happy times
sweet

-
Rooooooll On the Floor Laughin! Great one, Mark! Too funny!
Ah! I too had the PB&J in just the same way
and it gave me freckles some I have until today!
I ate that same bread over and over
and even gave some to poor old rover.
I kinda miss the lumpyness of it and the sweet nutty flavor
with the strawberry I favor.
Food wasn't much important back then,
unless you opened your lunch box and PB&J had been replaced with spam!

-
-
haha - my mom never "spammed" me that I can recall, but she did switch it for bologna now and then, which I liked but not as much. I also had a dog named Rover!! Yet another thing we have in common, my friend. And of course, he got approximately 20% of everything I ate his entire life. It got me ready for having a literary agent later. lol
BTW, I'm working on that idea we talkeda bout, in my head anyway. Now to get it on paper!
-
-
HAHAHAHAHA!! Over here you'd share vegemite sandwiches with your youthfull love, And we'd all laugh and say, over in america those idiots eat peanut butter (known as peanut paste here in the west) with JELLY!!! They are just STRANGE! Over here jell-o is jelly and jelly is jam, so you can understand why we thought you were total nuts. (Pea-nuts to be exact) Although no one here eats peanut butter with jam anyway, we still think you are nuts.
And just for the record!! I LOVE peanut paste passionately, although the Dairy board does allow us to call it peanut butter these days.
This is a wonderful poem, I love your peoms that take me back to good memeories of childhood and this is one of them.

Austar,
I've never tried Vegemite. Any chance of sending some over?
-
-
Of course I'll be happy to send you over some vegemite as long as you promise the following.
a. That you'll still be my friend
b. That you won't let Claudia try it because I don't want anything to do with divorce proceedings.
c. You'll sneak some onto a piece of bread next when Colin's at your house, take a pic when he tastes it, and then send it to me so I can have a good laugh. That man has the best facial expression I have ever seen. -
-
It's a deal!
-
-
-
Please to inform me; what is vegemite?
-
-
http://whatscookingamerica.net/History/VegemiteHistory.htm
Its the Australian equivalent to peanut butter and jelly sandwiches
-
This is one for Austar, obviously, but I think I can help. Vegemite is Australia's version of Spam, as made famous by Men at Work when they sang,
Buying bread from a man in Brussels,
He was six-foot-four and full of muscles.
I said, "Do you speak my language?"
He just smiled and gave me a vegemite sandwich!"
I hope this helps.

SPAM!!!! Are you insane???????????????
Spam is Spam, Vegemite is Vegemite
Oh Good grief!!

Ahhhhh, Mark. When will you discover the power of chicken? I like this write. Not my favorite of yours, but I like it just the same. You have a talent for whimsical beauty in your poetry - even when only a little thing is being described, as here. Good! - oce

I knew exactly what "boss" meant.
This had me crackin' up. I love your avitar too. It just seem to fit the whole aura, time and moment recreated here.
Thanks for sharing this and best wishes in all of your endeavors. Keep that pen handy and ever ready for use dear poet. Good luck in the contest!
