Runaway

Runaway

It was so very long ago the circus came to town
And drew me to its crazy swirling breast.
Elephants and painted ladies.  Thrills and chills galore.
Just a kid; it looked like its the best.
'Round and 'round the Ferris Wheel, the rides, The old Snake Oil.
'Round and 'round; from town to town we rode.
Stable boy to roustabout the circus was my home;
Places where my face; it never showed.
Twenty eight years later here I stand with painted face
Just a clown among the other clowns
Staring at them as I trip and fall down at their feet.
All my life like bricks comes crashing down.
Mom and Dad.  They both look well.  I miss them now.  The pain!
This is my home town. Maybe I could stay?
Good-bye old circus.  Hello home.  The clowns will say that I'm
The one that from the circus ran away.

Thank you Larry for sharing this intriguing piece, but I'm so sorry to say, it cannot be considered in this contest because you are not a member...I'm glad you felt inspired though you've penned an engaging yet sad write with a happy ending...I do however feel the lines need some tightening up, because this poem has great potential, it was truly a pleasure to read

    Larry,
This is a remarkable write that paints such a detailed picture in so few words. You have captured the feeling and mood so well.

Thanks for your entry into this contest but...did you realize that this is a contest for the Poetic Bandits Group only?

You could join if you wish, we'd be glad to have another talented poet among our ranks.

    Bandits Rock!

      I'll check that out.

I just figured I owed you the poem because it was off your pic. Got such a headache right now.... Peace.

This is a wonderful story-telling poem... I can just imagine it being read out loud to children (maybe to make them think twice about joining the circus )... very well done - I wish you the best in the contest!

    Keep writing

      Oh dear,

I would encourage everyone to run away and join the circus, or at least a rock band. I do at every opportunity.

Great story! I used to be a professional clown in Florida, went to clown school and college. I ran away but for different reasons. I so enjoyed reading good luck in the contest Theresa

Do clowns that run away from the circus, become accountants? I mean what would you do after such a career? You made me think deep thoughts today.. Good for you Larry!

      I dunno.

Clowns being actors of a sort; I think that judging by Sonny Bono, Arnie, Ron Raygun and Jesse Ventura they mostly becaome politicians.
