The Other Side of Abortion

I'm sorry you were raped.
I'm sorry that you never wanted a child.
I'm sorry I'm growing inside of you.
I'm sorry that I'm a "mistake".

I have a soul even though they call me a "fetus",
I understand that you were a victim of rape... I'm sorry,
But what you don't understand is that I'm a victim too!
Send that bastard to death role, but NOT I! NOT I!

Why should I be punished for "HIS" crime?
I never asked to be created this way...
I'm YOUR baby not his, if only you let me be,
If you could see me grow up, I'd love you so much...

Please don't let me die.
You may not see it now, but God created me,
Perhaps I was your godsend, or maybe I am someone elses.
Please mommy, don't let them take me before I've lived.

I'm so glad that your mother chose life,
You get to smell the tulips while walking down the street,
You can see the sun, moon, and pet a fluffy creature you call a "cat",
You have a mommy and daddy that love you, why not me? why not me?!

Why won't I have a chance to crawl, to walk?
To show you the love only a child can bring?
How come I won't be able to look into your eyes and you in mine?
To smile, to laugh, to clap my hands and play hide in seek?!

WHY?!?!

I will never have a chance to go to school, go to prom...
I'll never get to see who you are, what you look like,
To feel happiness, heartache, betrayal and triumph...
No, All I get to feel in this very brief life, is DEATH.

Author notes

I know that ABORTION and RAPE are very serious issues and I know I am putting myself out there for some really harsh and angered criticisms... BUT this is how I feel.

RAPE IS NOT OKAY but neither is ABORTION. I believe that whether you "accidently" got pregnant, got raped, or feel you would be an unfit parent please, please THINK if that was you. I was adopted and I'm so grateful for it. I just wanted to express that the "fetus" which is a BABY is the victim too from a horrible act of rape.

I like the approach you took, writing from the baby's point of view. It's a very powerful subject and very well written. In line 8 I think you mean death row. While I don't agree 100% with your point of view, your argument is made very eloquently here. Bravo.

Congratulations on your gold for this remarkably honest piece. I am completely against abortion unless it is a case of incest or the rape of a child who is just too young and fragile to give birth. My niece was only 13 when she nearly died in childbirth--a rape--she kept the baby and her family helped her raise her. The child is now an adult, married and has a child of her own.

You make so much good sense in your writing. There are wonderful people out there who want children and would love to give a beautiful baby a home. A body can return to normal, but an aborted child can never give anyone love like an adopted one can. Great job, Sweetie! Patricia

One of my best childhood friends was a rape child, and her family and her turned out fine. I mean, ofcourse it was hard sometimes, but her family loved her and treated her just the same.

Congrats on the gold, Sara. I had a feeling this would be the winner. I entered a column, not expecting to win because it's not a poem, but just to add to the voices saying "Don't do it!" I'm glad you won the gold with this and hope it gets wider exposure. It's a message everyone needs to hear.

    EXCELLENT!!!

Well done!!! I was reading a poem of ScarletO that has a picture with a woman in a jar. Picture of grown person in jar, reminded me of the miscarried fetuses at University of Oklahoma (not aborted/miscarried) of each month of gestation of a baby from month one on in formaldehyde. I agree with you 100%. I'm glad you chose life because your words are a blessing that may give life and end the death sentence, abortion, a mother considering may, after reading your words, reconsider life. One of your most powerful and best writes!!!

Mmmmmm, a very touchy subject here, and I appauld you for taking on something like this.

However, abortion is a choice we can make in this day and age, and I feel it is such a personal subject, it's hard to comment on it, unless you have actually been there.

To say the baby is also a victim of the rape is a good point, one I have never thought of before. But, imagine being the mother to a child that was conceived by rape, it would remind you of that moment every day. Even carrying the child would be so hard. I'm guessing you have never been raped or had an abortion?

Abortion is something that will be here as long as humans are, wheather it be legally or illegally. Personally, I don't want to see us going backwards and having illegal abortions taking place, which very often result in horrific complications.

Unless you have been in that situation yourself, I think it is brave/stupid to write such a piece, but kudos to you for airing your opinions.

Just remember, for the majority of women, chosing to have an abortion is the hardest decision they have ever faced, and I don't belive anyone takes it lightly.

A good peice here, very thought provoking. I do feel however, it is a personal choice for everyone and no one should be judged for making a certain decision in life.

I am not trying to be argumentative with you here, not at all. I just wanted to share my thoughts that your poem conjured.

You sure tackled the most controversial subject possible this time. Not only abortion, but abortion after a rape. I agree that it's taking a life, no matter what the situation is, and regardless of the rationale. I can understand a woman not wanting to carry the baby of someone who brutalized them, but your reasoning in this poem is 100% true. It's not the baby's fault. Every abortion is a tragedy. You wrote this beautifully.

I can see this was a hard thing for you put out there, facing alot of pro-choicers, which I am one. But was recently put in a awkward position by a lifelong friend, who made that choice. Had she been a teenager,a victim of rape, I could have been more understanding. But she is not. I just don't see her the same way. I know its wrong. I know I shouldn't judge her and I am really trying not to. She plans on trying for another in a few months. What???? I don't understand at all.

I get this and applaud you for stepping forward and speaking out.

This was very good. I love how you wrote it from the baby's perspective. Most of the people who would get angered by this either have had an abortion or are just complete jerks. You did quite a wonderful job writing it. I've been raped before... and luckily I'm not carrying that guy's baby. I did get pregnant by accident, too... accident, but it's not a mistake. (one of my friends called this baby a mistake, I bout took her had off for it... figuratively speaking...) Keep up your good work! Best of luck in my contest!
