She Is Still

There is a Still that lies along the surface
and just beneath that,
just beneath that peaceful Still
there is a fire raging
a fire so great it threatens silently
to consume her peaceful Still
For ages Still reigned
Patience curbed the flames
From the depths of the soul this fire churns
scorching the inside
While on the outside
Still remains
On the outside
Still smiles, Still laughs, Still soothes
The fire it grows bigger though
and after awhile
even Still can feel the heat
The surface begins to sweat
The peace begins to melt
The calm begins to buckle
In the end
the outside remains Still
A little beaten
A little scarred
A little sullied
But by the grace of God
She is Still

  • A wonderful piece. I loved the lined "For ages Still reigned." It reinforces with ease that still is not simple a way of being but a concept that is tangible and has a persona too it. "Stills" strength is understated but stronger than any bluster from louder sources. I can see this in you everyday

By the end of the 2nd line you foreshadowed so well that I anticipated the end. Good. We like to know what's coming. I think the title set the tone perfectly, and, again, foreshadowed the metaphor of Still with the Calm Persona you portrayed. I caught the feeling instantly and rode with you. Even through the melting and buckling, the beating and scarring. Your voice becomes a friend, sharing difficult experiences, we can all relate in our own degree, so well you have written it. And, by the grace of your pen, in the end we survive along with you. Still. Here.

I think this is a piece to savor and share, and I hope many others get the opportunity to read it. It performs a healing. Art, some say, heals, and I think this is an example.

      Thank you

It is a quality I hold dear and even fight for sometimes. To be able to be "still" is a treasure. It provides strength and passion and drive. I am glad that it is a feeling you can relate to.
