Black chapeau upon my crown
I don't migrate, I stick around
Northern Americas I call home
Keep feeders full, I will not roam.
Though my size may not be grand
I'm honored in New England.
I'm the state bird in two states
They're impressed by my fine traits.
I don't migrate, I stick around
Northern Americas I call home
Keep feeders full, I will not roam.
Though my size may not be grand
I'm honored in New England.
I'm the state bird in two states
They're impressed by my fine traits.

Ooooh, that's a gorgeous bird!
Black chapeau upon my crown
I don't migrate, I stick around
Northern Americas I call home
Keep feeders full, I will not roam.
This stanza really stands out for me. These are excellent rhyming couplets. My mom was born in Maine, and my sister lives there. Nature is one of my favorite topics to read about. I absolutely love being around it. It has the most calming effect on me. Beautifully written, Dennis! My wife pointed out a blue jay this morning. It landed on top of my brother's barbecuer. Fortunately, it was before we had any of the corn and chicken on it from this afternoon. It wasn't too hot, but it sure took off pretty fast.

I think I'm hooked on these smilies. It seems like I put more and more of them in my comments.

Top Hat!
This is a grand write! Worthy of a trophy! As always great timing & rhyming. Love the title & the way you display this fine little bird. BTW: this poem has 3 applause but I clicked the wrong key & it got wasted! Now I've got to make this up to you! -

I like the way you referred to him has having a black chapeau on his crown. I will have to check to see what states they are state birds in. I have a window feeder that is right in front of my desk where I sit with my computer. The sparrows come to it many many times a day. They are literally less than two feet from me. they sit and look at me, as I look at them. We have a wonderful relationship. If the feeder gets empty, they sit there and chirp at me if I am at the desk.
Thank you.

black chapeau is cute and must be the distinguishing feature as they are called "Schwarzkopfmeise" (black head something or other) here in Germany, too. I grew up with them in the cold winter woods of the Adirondacks so know how well they do indeed stick around. I never knew they were the state birds of Maine and Massachusetts, though, til this contest - how sweet. Definitely a fave. Thank you.

I guess I'm going to have to move to one of these states
a great idea to adopt this sweet fellow as a mascot !
I love the "black chapeau upon my crown"-line ...
we have those birdies here in europe, too, but their chest is more yellow and they have a big white round spot on their neck, like garuda
happy to find you on this playground, brother ...
all the best to you,
marion

This is a great write. I love how you do it. I can only write like essay type things, which are poopy.
I hope you do well in the contest. Good luck.

Liked this poem about this bird that feeds in my feeder often too. Easy to read and understand the description of this little bird.
