I remember eating in restaurants
And eating in the car
Remember when? I can remember when
We used to sleep in hotel rooms
An' once slept inside the car
Remember when?
And we toured around these country towns
Just drivin' in my car
You stared ahead not lookin' 'round
Your better off now where you are
You were a long way from home
Better not try your luck too far
Remember when? I can remember when
For twenty years I use to sing this song
Since nineteen sixty one
I say amen, it's my personal hymn
You can shout out praising to the lord
With your tabernacle heartfelt hymns
But it's not my scene I gotta say
I've never been one to kneel down an' pray
No matter which road I'm on
Just say amen, can you remember when?
The lord was your shepherd
He never was one to lead you astray
He gave you all your daily bread
To help you on your way
But I could never get the drift
Like turning water into wine
I could never make the play
So lay your head down
Take a breath and start to dream
Use my arm for a pillow
And we'll talk about what might have been...

A mixture of emotions in this piece that's for sure. I love the imagery in the first part.

I understand where these words are coming from, not exactly from personal experience but I see differences in spiritual depth among couples that are not quite together on issues but still trying to make a life together.
