Coming Home

My eyelids are heavy
Tear stains on my cheeks
Fear overcomes me and I panic
Not wanting to go this way
Alone and frightened

Sirens sound in the distance
Help coming too late
I close me eyes as I take my last breath
And light surrounds me

A few seconds go by and I feel at peace
I feel someone holding my hand
brushing my hair from my face
Hugging me with love

I wonder who this pure soul is
How they stopped to help a dying stranger
I try to move my head in their direction
My vision is blurry, but I can see her perfectly
A child with wings

"Don't be afraid."
"You are safe and loved,
it's time to come home."
The whispered words of an angel

A smile curves my lips

I wait for my ending-beginning

And as I enter the Pearly gates

He whispers "Welcome back"

Author notes

I dedicate this poem to anyone who has ever lost a loved one or friend.

“Love is stronger than death even though it can't stop death from happening, but no matter how hard death tries it can't separate people from love. It can't take away our memories either. In the end, life is stronger than death.”
