Back then,
when the earth
was not yet fully developed,
it was oft times racked by ‘quakes,
and, by orbiting too close to the sun,
denuded of vegetation.
The caverns beneath
became filled with detritus
from the surface above,
and mankind
lived some sort of life
down there.
As minor tremors
came and went,
the cavern dwellers
made many plans to discover
what was happening above
on the surface.
Not knowing what reception
might await them
they resorted to camouflage,
hoping to blend in
with what they imagined
the surface might be like;
only to find, when they emerged,
a flat, arid, and treeless plain.
Author notes
picture option
Nullarbor Plain (Latin nulla arbor - no tree). A vast bare plain, north of the Great Australian Bight, so named because of its treeless character.
