Beating on a tin drum
where the homeless sleep
on dusty ground with cardboard feet.
They say that
doomsday sayers proffer doomsday lies
under the windows of empty lives.
Tomorrow isn't the end of Earth
or Earthly things,
but sure enough it is a death
though many still deny it's face.
Slapping on a chiseled bench
under squirrel nests and rainy sky,
the homeless try to rest their heads
before the Earth's tilt throws them out.
Hands on mouths, hands on ears,
while the Earth is slipping past a save,
wealthy folks buy out the stores
and hungry children cry and cry.
The hazy sunsets and ruddy lakes
foretell the Earth's future shape,
where fish will die before they swim,
float belly up in chemical swill.
Beat on battered drum,
beat it so that all can hear
the sound
of time's wristwatch,
running down, down the hill.

Time moving past the indigent taking hope just beyond grasp. The power here reminds the world that tomorrow will not end our woes, but the clock has not stopped as the water is polluted. The earth will lose, its on the downhill pull. This rings with insight compelling and clear. This maintains good poetic technique.

The clock is slowing on the time we have to make amends, but I have faith that not everybody is ignoring it. Very well written here. Love, Chez

OH I do like this very much. Truly a splendid entry to this contest. ...the sound to time's wristwatch...
I loved that image.
Well done. ~Pamela

Very well done here, stand and walk in this poem is a poet's voice calling for change, attention to the things seemingly unavoidably before our eyes...how can we miss them...but we do, how dare we continue. Thank you for this fine entry into the contest and best of luck in the judging...PK

good meter and flow
it is sick how today the fish are floating belly up due to the toxic waste we throw in the lake and ocean daily.
How people live in cardboard boxes I will never comprehend other survive. I know the cost of living is sky rocketing for us all. I just hope the new elected one will do something for us all.
