Music Hall Variety Blues

We used to walk the boards in variety
There was such glamour in those days
Perhaps not the top rung of society
As we danced upon the stage
Ah! such times and so much energy
Seems like years have passed away
And who cares now? Who gives a toss?
We're now disposable commodities they say

But sometimes when the old band plays
On a gramophone in the attic
You can hear the applause and curtains rise
Above the scratching and the static

Now some days are better than others
It can only get a little better
As these old aching bones remember
On rainy days that just get wetter
It can only get a little better

Now the retirement home is closing
Staying here was temporary anyway
Tonight it's shepherd's pie again
The cook has pissed it all away
But it doesn't matter after all
At least that's what we all think
For these rheumy eyes have seen it all
Being poured right down the sink

So smile for us
Just dry those tears
We had our time
There is nothing for us here

Now somedays are better than others
It can only get a little better
As these old aching bones remember
On rainy days that just get wetter
It can only get a little better

A very thoughtful but sad piece penned here. As memory revolves in sweet surrender, allowing room for the heart to embrace. Nice write!;f

a wonderful poem with beautiful images . I once read somewhere we begin to see the true beauty of a place or time, after we have left it. so true and the poem definitely expresses this.
    thanks.

Your song was heard and the line that hit me most was:
"On a grammaphone in the attic" ... the silent place!
For once the muse is noted & recorded it remains embossed upon the senses ... joy
