What Would You Die For?

You asked me what the thing I would die for was
I said I didn't know
Answers ran fleetingly through me head
Like a rock caught in a river's flow

I saw you every day at school
We were the best of friends
We were together all the time
I thought there would be no ends

One summer evening it was just you and me
Your question had been on my mind
I opened my mouth to give you my answer
How could I have been so blind

But out of the corner of my eye I saw
Him crouching behind the fence
I saw the knife glinting in his hand
My fear was so intense

I tried to run but all I could think
Was not him, please not Jase
With tears sparkling in my eyes I smiled at him
As the horror dawned on his face

He saw his answer in my eyes
He was my only one
How could I leave him behind
I closed my eyes preparing for death, my life was coming undone

The man jumped from the side
And sprang at him
No was all I thought
I lunged for him crying out, my chances looked so slim

I made it to Jase just in time
The knife sliding into my back
The answer to my tears was in his eyes
Then everything went black

I answered is question with more than words
I hope he escaped the knife
I gave myself to give him time
My answer was his life

a great story and a heart gripping ending. I like the way you made the prompt very subtle and building it up. 'But out of the corner of my eye I saw
    Him crouching behind the fence
I saw the knife glinting in his hand
My fear was so intense' this was a really good part of the story where the tension began to build up

well done a really interesting interpretation

    good story.

to give ones life for another is the best gift one can give, it reminds me of someone who gave his life for me. i liked "my answer was his life."
