A Pig in a Poke [silver]

Missing image
The truth is as good a place
to start as any-
Yet it seems too often used
as a tool to be cruel.

But a lie for any reason
          is still just a lie,
and when we believe them
we are the essence of a fool.

The truth can only hurt when
it's ourselves we have deceived.

For in our hearts we all know
what should or should not
                be believed...

But we taint it with our own
  wants, desires and needs-
  blaming anything but ourselves,
  our soul continues to bleed.

Author notes

A pig in a poke is an idiom that means foolishly accepting something without a full understanding of its basis... It's origin stems from: To let the cat out of the bag, which occured when a deception was revealed. In medieval times piglets were often taken to market in a sack where they were sold. If the purchaser was particularly gullible he was sometimes sold not a piglet, but a cat in the sack. The sack or bag being refered to as a poke... A very thought provoking entry. I adored the authors notes - insight to title without spoiling the write, which was written beautifully and spilled emotions with imagery.

What a great truthful write! I love both the message and the wonderful rhyme scheme you came up with... a total picture that flows musically to the ring of honesty.... Well done.

When at first we set out to deceive.... Yes, ultimately it is ourselves we hurt the most. It becomes harder and harder to perceive truth from fiction...Very well done and best wishes...
