A tribute to a man and his wife

He took Elizabeth to Italy
And learned of life from viewing ancient Rome
He wrote blank verse and rhyme but never free
While travelling abroad and loving home

He learnt his art from Shelley and John Donne
Dramatic monologue his special style
Twenty thousand lines of verse were spun
Those Roman murder plots take quite a while!

His was the first voice heard beyond the tomb
As Edison recorded "Aix to Ghent"
His darkest writing fills the air with gloom
But comedy was often what he meant

Though Tennyson outshone him through his life
There is no doubt who had the greater wife!

well I love Elizabeth B. Browning, and I agree she was the better wife. Thank you for celebrating two of my favorite poets. Excellent poem...novy

  • Who was Tennyson's wife anyway? I think Browning probably had a more interesting life but I really have no idea who was the better poet. Agree with you about the dramatic monologues and I liked your mention of Ghent to Aix. That was one of my favourite poems in primary because of the rhythm. (It does lend itself to parody though.)

Anyway, an enjoyable write and congrats on the silver trophy.
