His face was always painted sad,
not just because of the makeup
around his lips and eyes,
but also the makeup in his heart,
that drove him to finger-paint
a look of great sorrow
all across his expressions,
as he made the tiny tots laugh.
You see, he was
abused as a child,
a mother who up and
left him at three,
a drunken father who
beat him until the state
put him in an orphanage.
There of course he faced bullies,
and so eventually he chose to
run away to join the circus,
at the age of twelve.
Once there he worked
his sad way up to being a clown.
From the very first time
he smeared on the greasepaint,
he swore he would always be
a joyless faced clown who could
still have lots of good times.
That way he could reach any
unhappy children with the message,
that no matter how sad you are,
there are always ways to have fun,
and many faces you can wear
that hide the facts,
that life isn't always
lollipops and teddy bears
Just his self-taught way of being
strong in a cruel world.
