My parents don't understand. They think I go to that hellhole happy. But, I dread every minute of it. The witches seem to enjoy pinning me down and asking me questions I dare not answer. The other fiends think it's funny that I have been mocked. For going to the Simmes' house makes me shiver in my hammedowns. However, once I leave this hell upon earth, I will go to the city of angels.
How Amber describes the city. It has roads of golden, and a godlike presence that makes me desire Amber's life. She quotes about the elegant dresses the young ladies wear and the expensive cigars the men smoke. They act as if money grows on trees, but in this pit that I call home, people try to make a dollar out of fifteen cents. Yes, it's depressing, but to see people eager to get out of bed and work, suprises me.
Then when I saw Peggy wearing a brand new dress, I become green with envy. People around here can barely pay the rent, let alone buy new clothes! If Mum and Da could get better jobs in the upper city, I would have a wardrobe of new dresses. Just like Amber after she left the Troy shack. She is a reaporter for the Los Angeles Times. So when we get a copy, (which is rare) we look for the name Amber Troy, and smile as we cut it out and hang it up on the wall. Amber longs to send money home, but Da says she needs it more than us. I scowl because we DO need the money. For a new house in upper-Francisco. I need an education, but we cant afford it. That's why I work at the Simmes' house, while Mum cleans for Mrs. Andrews, a widow, and when Da shines shoes on Yorkin's Hill.
Then when I heard that Amber wished for me to stay with her in Los Angeles, I almost fainted. Da thought it might be dangerous, but Amber assured him that I would be safe, and I would get and education. Then all was settled. At the end of summer, I was going to Los Angeles.
Please tell me what you think
