bougainvillea

your mouth’s a house, open
and warm like a summer
in Granada -

a full sun plays about me

in every room
where love is enacted, I spill
over the window sills
of your lips

in paper-light arpeggios,
profusely purple

Beautiful. I can see why Night Hope made this first on her list. You manipulate language so delicately - "paper-light arpeggios" being a prime example. Wonderful.

    The Bougainvillea Flowers

    are quite terrestrial--
they carry a barrel of dirt around
    like it was nothing.
    Perhaps they only wish to
    distance themselves from
    the yodeling worms

Sighhhhh, is there aything to be said about this that hasn't already been said? You definitely know how to create maximum impact with a few words, where many of us bang on and on and on and get nowhere *cough cough*

Loved full sun and window sill of lips Reminds me of your poem Sum of Hands, or was it Duration? I get confused between yours and Guy's! Anyway, it's the idea of the house; love has been connected to many things: flowers, the ocean, the sky, the universe and so on. I particularly love the idea of the house though, with it's many rooms.

    Stunning

I had to read this...bougainvillea also grew in the yard with the jasmine...reading these two poems have brought back a lot of memories

    "in paper-light arpeggios,
    profusely purple"

I think of purple as being rich and lush, to pair it with 'paper-light arpeggios' tells the whole story of this poem for me. It speaks to me of matured love where the fires no longer threaten to incinerate, but provide an abiding warmth...as before, quiet passion. lol..I hope this makes sence.

Quiet and precise poetry is the beauty of ones own heart, aching loudly. Some poems stumble over words. Others die before they are finished. But this has just the right amount of sound/imagery that paints a rather astute picture. I actually read this with no punctuation breaks and to be honest it could work either way. I mean of course the commas and such help add a delicate pause here and there but a reader can usually understand the poetic pattern, especially in a poem of this nature without the guidance of such formulas. I think the ending is purely magical.

    Granada is Moorish

    but your poetry is more-ish!
Exotic name and place in the valley of Andalusia.
How you used bougainvillea as an informing colour winding through your warm house of love! Nicci, you are a true lyricist. The bloom of love - profusely purple.
Thank you, love poet or poet of love, whichever you prefer.

    SIGH SIGH SIGH SIGH!!!!

I just wrote a blog about how much I love Granada and the Spanish (Lorca's) ideas on "duende" and the creative spirit. sigh. AND it's so hot here in Texas...it's making me miss the Alhambra and heat and...other such things.

    Beautiful poem!

Oh yes, i think i have latin or spanish blood in me, lolol!! They do have a vibe about them. The bougainvillea is actually Granada's official flower. It's almost winter here and it's still very warm, so i know what you're talking about. Thanks Shannon!!

You have taught me something new about one of my favorite cities! (their flower). Granada is a magical place, simply magical. Lorca said: "Granada looks splendid…it is an astounding richness, which, no matter how stylized, cannot be captured. Granada isn’t pictorial, even for an Impressionist. It isn’t pictorial, just as a river is not architectonic. Everything runs, plays, and slips away. Poetry and Music. A city of fugues without a skeleton. Melancholy with vertebrae."

My first impression is to take a deep breath and fill my self with the hidden intensity of this piece, that is what penetrates my emotions. This such a highly sensitized work. I can sense lovers in this piece, knowing one another, enjoying the freedom of their love together. This is the way it should be. Exceptional poetry. Geo
