Through the grass and through the woods
he played hide and seek…
Growling a little more than he really should
made my bony knees go weak.
Within moments I had been spotted
and dinner came to mind.
Roots of grass no longer rotted
my sneakers dug them up this time.
His eyes registering a delicious treat
so in opposite direction I ran.
To the intersection of freedoms retreat
I ran it as fast as I can.
Not even once looking back,
I didn’t want to waste the time.
I was ahead, a good half mile slack,
when I stumbled across a stump of pine.
Down to the ground, I let out a roar
only to see the bear upon me!
Licking his chops, he won the score,
a dinner snack I would be.
When a whistle blew so loud
the bear turned away from me.
On a horse, a man shout out,
“Griz, set the camper free!”
A lick to my cheek, he showed me his teeth,
intimidation now wets my pants.
I sucked in my chest; I could barely breathe
I went off in English chants.
His paws hit the dirt hard and fast,
as he bolted off on a dead run.
Off in the distance, he vanished at last,
this trips was no longer fun.
