For two young years of my life,
All I drew was blue, and scribbled brown around it.
It was no use
I tried in vain to recreate all this...
Eventually I lost the need, or lost the knack
But as I can remember, the car had no roof
No windows
It was the rustbucket Corolla
Hazy line between the front and back seat
Alone and unafraid, I floated by, feeling no wind
Hearing their
...rush
and nothing else
To my left, an oceanic river
A rock dam, on which placid ducks sunned themselves,
Stretched as far as I could see
As the water poured tirelessly over its shallow edge
Buttermilk churning and tempting
Another, to my right
Catapulting down the roadside rocks into a hidden chasm,
Stretched as far up as I could see
As the water raged like a stubborn militia
Calling, sighing...roaring
One impossibly wide, one impossibly tall
And others floated before me
Narrower, suspended, and stunningly silvery
Sourced from a sparkling heaven, and flowing nowhere
Channeled by nothing, propelled indiscriminately
As was I
At the time, I knew nothing of Dali
But I knew how to capture a moment
Suspend it and preserve it
Even the relentless speed of a waterfall
I could discern the peace and fear its passing
I knew how to
pause
Perhaps I've lost the need...
Or lost the knack.
Author notes
I can't believe I found this contest--I was OBSESSED with waterfalls as a kid, and this dream I had (documented in poem) either triggered or exemplified the obsession, I'm not sure. Thanks!

I am amazed you took the time out of your day to comment on my poem. This just struck a chord in me and I could sense the need at the time to 'make' it happen. The trip in the Corolla is alive as you looked out on both sides. Losing the need or losing the knack, I'm not sure of. However, I am sure of this, you got my attention and perhaps Dali would have been proud of your efforts? RC
