Birthdays.

Past.
A day to be anticipated
Weeks and weeks before
You get armloads of presents
But you always dream for more.
You'll throw a giant party
Where the whole school attends
Laughing, joking, playing
Everyone the best of friends.
Eating frosting coated cake
And getting sugar-high
Party hats and streamers
Balloons up in the sky.
Children running and screaming
Being entertained
Joyous celebrations
Of another year been gained.
Birthdays.

Present.
A couple close friends
Lying on sleeping bags
Staying up 'till midnight
Or until our eyes sag.
Sharing deepest secrets
Playing truth or dare
Laughing, crying, loving
With friends who are always there.
Going to the movies
After pizza's been gobbled down
Stuffing our faces with popcorn
Playing and joking around.
Being given neatly wrapped gifts
Just cheap material things
But the real present is that warm hug
And the joyous feeling it brings.
Birthdays.

Future.
Another year has been wasted
Another year is gone.
And into my stubborn ways
My darkened life has withdrawn.
Another wrinkle added
To this saddened face
Another hair has grayed
I look like a disgrace.
Everything I've known
Is twirling, twirling around
My life has tripped over itself
It's fallen to the ground.
I think of all the smiles
I've shared in my past years
But with each joking hallmark card
The past just disappears.
Birthdays.

Author notes

I don't know how it exactly relates to the pic, the pic made me think of birthdays, because they're celebrations of life, love and beauty. So I wrote about birthdays, and it kind of turned into this. I hope its okay for this contest.

This was perfect for the contest! I smiled when I read down through the lines here because there were many things I could personally relate to doing and feeling at one time or another. Thank you for sharing your words with me and best wishes to in all of your endeavors. Keep that quill dipped in ink and ever ready for use dear poet. Good luck in the contest!
