I am a scandalous scatterbrain
filling this small town with
scathing scuttlebutt.
She was a young widow with fine estate
and I laid claim scheming that I was
a man beyond the scrutiny of the denizens.
I scrambled and I scampered to her every wish
counting I love yous with dollar signs in my eyes.
No one had an inkling that I was a scoundrel
except her scornful aunt whim I buried in her garden.
I wrote her poems about daffodils
swaying gently on verdant hills.
She told me I was a sensitive man
not aware of my sultry plan.
When I found the numbers that unlocked
the safe behind the portrait of her dead husband.
I smiled with a sack of cash and cried out so long suckers
right on time for her to to me in my celebration.
