A question of faith

“I seek a purpose father” the Knight said kneeling before the holy man

“What do you mean son?” said the holy man in white

“I seek a purpose to live. A purpose to be the best I can”

“Have you lost your faith? Do you not know why you fight?”

“I fight for a faith I do not remember” the knight said laying down his sword

“We all face such challenges, you must believe in god”

“God does not know me anymore. He has not spoken to me. Not a word”

“He works in mysterious ways my child. Do not forget god”

“Why then have I lost the woman I loved, and all my brothers in war?”

“Why then has the lord chosen to let me live, while everyone I know is gone?”

“It is a difficult time for you my child. But you must not stray afar”

“Do not give up till his will is done”

The knight looked down on his shining sword, a sword that had been bloodied many times over

“Why does he test me father? Why must I prove my faith over and over again?”

The priest sighed; he had no answer when the knight’s ordeal would be over

“It is not what you have lost my child. It is what you can gain”

“What can I gain from killing other men? What can I gain from leading a lonely life?”

The priest shook his head slowly, he thought about what he would say next

He lifted his head to look at the knight in strife

The knight rose and tugged at the chain around his neck

Removing the golden cross he once proudly wore

“I am but one person, why would god worry about a tiny speck?”

The knight removed his heavy armour and let it fall to the floor

The priest opened his mouth to speak, but the knight had now turned around

“Do me one last favour father. Pray for me no more”
