Shall I be
a diamond?
With wanton bedazzlement
clasp Pride’s caput ~
Fortune's fancy-wear,
polished planes
flashing fiery enticements
on every other eye;
Impervious to entreaty,
unmoved by distress,
cold countenance glittering
condescension on kings
and beggars
indifferently...
or charcoal?
Food of the forge,
heart of the hearth,
opposer of poisons
and impurity
by sorption
into humble self,
refreshing flows,
replenishing virtue.
Vital tint
of graceful sumi-e,
invoker of memories
under deft digits,
preserver of places,
absent faces.
Idol imitating life
or
Embers shaping it?
Author notes
Bamboo charcoal is the principal ingredient in sumi-e, a form of Japanese ink painting that uses only black ink in various concentrations.

This is such an outstanding poem, in so many ways and levels. I enjoyed the contrasting, and the poem itself in general. Such a privilege to read. lol

Just a powerful contrasting of theme subjects
that extends well beyond appearance. This is
a showcase of knowledge and sensitivity...
a wonder to behold both in form & language.
Thank-you for this magnificent entry. Blue
