My Al

I am sure that before I was born
God pulled me aside
He said 'I'm giving you a sister
But as far as brothers go
I'm letting you choose your own'

and I chose you

You know how much you mean to me
And how much I was willing to sacrifice
To ensure that we always be friends
For so long we didn't speak
The darkest years of my life

and I missed you so much

I was still a child when we met
But you loved me as an equal
Right from day one
Never treating me like a silly little girl
who had a crush on you

And you have no idea how much that meant to me

For so long it was just you and me
You had your life, I had my life
But we had us and we didn't want to share
Now it's time to share our friendship
With the others in our life that we love

And I'm sure this is only the beginning

You will be my best friend, forever
What we have is very rare in this world
Just knowing you are there for me
makes the future I have to face seem ok
and our friendship will see me through

And you have no idea how comforting that is

No matter what happens in the future
I love you like David loved Jonathon
I know that our friendship
Is one of those special ones
That I am very blessed to experience

And you will always and forever be, My Al

This touched me a great deal. To have a friend as a brother of choice is rare gift indeed. Reading Mark's comment, I have to agree that such a special relationship bears accolades of heart and many years worthy of fruit.

(I had two brothers who were not first kin, but cousins. One is gone now. And I rarely hear from the other now, but we are close in spirit, so I understand this well.)

Alan is an inspiration to me and a very true friend, he's the only friend I have told of my current situation bar my online ones and my neighbour and will go and visit him and his wife during the week probably to 'debrief'

What a blessing to have such a profound friendship at all, let alone with a male other than your husband. Your husband must be very mature and secure to not let it bother him. Most husbands and wives want their spouses to have no significant relationships with the opposite sex. I guess this also blows away the theory in When Harry Met Sally that "no man can be friends with a woman he's attracted to." (Or vice versa.) This was a great tribute to Al. He must be a hell of a guy.

He is amazing, we have been friends for 20 years! I admit it's very unusual that 2 people who are married to other people can be so close, but I think because we were such close friends before we met our spouses they never worried, there was never any 'best friends wedding' type thing going on with us LOL, we are so boring. Besides we would be TOTALLY wrong for each other as husband and wife, we often laugh about that.

Bec, I'm so deeply touched that you wrote this poem for me. I was really moved by it, and everything in your poem reflects the way I feel about our friendship as well. Love Alan xxxx

Thanks Al, I'm so glad you liked it!! Our friendship has been a long one, but I never realised how precious it was until now.
