Unto himself, we have no choice;
Yet we live out full lives the while
With the very choice complete to voice.
It is a choice, not law, to speak.
Those who feel it law are slaves --
Slaves to the tongue which does leak
And aye chooses when it behaves.
The tongue is usurper of the mind,
Like Cromwell warts and all.
When will Charles return to bind
And send peace and goodwill to all?
Author notes
"No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promentory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend's or of thine own were. Any man's death diminishes me because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee." (John Donne, Meditation 17).
--- Certainly man is not an island, entire of itself. Even the British Isles needed trade in order to exist in the world, they communicated with the other countries. But nevertheless, Britain is an island, and it cannot be otherwise. The same so am I, an introvert. As much as I'd like to shun the other countries of my little world, they will always unfortunately exist.

Always thought provoking
Point well taken. Our relationships, and lack thereof, are derived or shunned by choice.

"The tongue is usurper of the mind"
Oh how true this is! Like Jim I know have a little more knowledge than before reading this Greg. As you say No man is an island - as others (men, islands) will always exist around you.

I liked this offering which gave me the feeling of eavesdropping on an internal dialogue. I also enjoyed reading the longer version of the famous quote. I had not previously linked the "no man's an island" with "for whom the bell tolls" so thanks for the enlightenment.
