Thoughts on a Summer Evening

Man.
When I'm over-the-hill,
with a husband and three kids,
two cats,
and a dog,
working nine-to-five,
with bills to pay, and the endless chores...

I hope I still look up with wonder at the night sky,
with its celestial ladel of the gods,
and the hunter of the stars.
I hope it still brings me joy
to catch fireflies on a humid summer evening,
and I hope I still smile
when they light up the world in my palms.

I hope I never lose the excitement for life
I had when I was seven
and have at seventeen.
It is the only thing
that will
keep
me
alive.
