Hansel Vs Gretel

Ready, on your marks, get set...go!

Hansel is swiftly off of the starting blocks,
with Gretel a few paces behind, but gaining ground.

Bright, colour coded crumbs leave their red and blue trails,
as both children are lost from view among the forest trees.

Switching to crow cam, we catch fleeting glimses of the pair,
both are weaving to avoid bushes, heading ever deeper into the gloom.

Wait! What is this? They appear to have agreed on a mutual break,
and are sitting outside an odd looking cottage, licking their lips!

In the history of the Fairytale Marathon this has never occurred.
Oh no, apologies, we now appear to have lost sight of the little darlings.

*zooms in*

Folks, it seems that the building has been constructed of, well,
edible materials. The gingerbread door has a large hole in it.

What excitement! The owner has come home, boy is she in for a shock!
Let's hope that she is the understanding type. Here is the view through the window.

What is this, aww bless, the old lady appears to be cooking them a meal.
After them breaking in, this is a rather sweet gesture from her.

Both of the kids are up, and peering into her oven, no doubt admiring

her culinary skills, while the sweet old dear stands behind them.

*loses picture,a door slams, followed by a scream*

Well, sadly, Hansel and Gretel have yet to appear, but the crone has come out and is
offering our crew freshly baked pies. What a nice gesture, while we wait for the race to recommence.

It's all over! The runners must have quit and slipped out of the back door, shame on them.
This day has been odd, but the meat pies tasted lovely and fresh despite the weird blue and red flecked pastry……

Author notes

Hansel and Gretal

OK, I know that this is not strictly a poem, but hey, it was fun and will hopefully raise a smile or two even if I do not get ranked.

I enjoyed this take on the old story of Hansel and Gretel I know it sounds weird, but a game of mine and my children since my eldest was little and I read him Hansel and Gretel is to check their fingers before dinner, one by one There is always a good reason NOT to eat them LOL but they have fun with it anyway. Of course, my eldest doesn't line up anymore. At 14, he is 5 foot 9 inches tall and weighs 155 pounds... he has, to his relief, outgrown the oven just in time NOT to play the silly game anymore (it's silly now, because he's a man-child instead of boy child) lol.

Anyway, a great write and I liked thinking of this as much as I enjoyed your version of the tale.

s and best wishes always... ~genie~
