Better than a watch dog
you cry when company comes up the driveway;
Beautiful sentinal
we admire your territorial tenacity.
With a harem of lovelies
you strut your stuff to impress;
females lay eggs in the bushes
bringing young to yard when ready.
Fourteen years of raising your kind
gives me an appreciation of this species;
A kaleidoscope of colored shiny feathers
glorious greens, brilliant blues.
Collected your tail plumage,
used for decorative purposes;
also for making jewellery
to sell at farmers' markets.
Miss your theatrical tactics
but relish the memories;
from castle royalty to farm fowl
amazing creature found in nature.
Please tell me what you think

Nice!
Good luck in my contest!

I am guessing you have raised peafowl. I did some research on these beauties and was surprised to read how they can get very stressed if confined too much. Just like me, I guess.
Thanks for your entry to the contest and your continued support.

You didn't really raise peacocks, did you? Have you read Emily Carr's book, 'The Heart of the Peacock' Just a fantastic book. Of course, being Canadian, you'll know she was a painter, but later she wrote books. Your poem is wonderful, too.

Wonderful Write
In my home town one of the Catholic Churchs had a peacock. I think it was raised by one of the brothers at the Seminary. I used to listen to it's cry or tweet or whatever it is called. Good write and good luck in the contest...Katie
