in steamy kitchen air,
embracing pink shrimp
and Maryland blue crabs.
Plump canary corn
bathing,
sweating savory summer juices.
The aromatic dinner bell
rings in coastal dusk,
a chiming lure for all to hear...
except the chef...
the anosmatic maestro
who patiently awaits
arrival on the palate.
Like a blind Picasso
he blends culinary strokes on canvas
with flavor his only reward.
Author notes
Anosmia - the loss/absence of the sense of smell
I love to cook and I love many varied flavors, but I was born without a sense of smell. I've never smelled a single morsel of food in my life. This poem flowed quite easily out of my love for cooking and eating while being in the dark when it comes to smell.
Yes, people always ask if I can taste without smell... yes, I can. As it was explained to me, the chemical reaction is there, it is just the sensory reaction that never developed.

I learned a new word here (anosmia) and so sorry to hear that you cant smell. I can think of situations where this would be a plus
Sadly, I am allergic to shellfish and have never tasted many of those delicacies...I can imagine that the aromatic dinner bell ringing would have people who love seafood salivating like Pavlov's dogs. Ha! A blind Picasso..even so, you have painted a masterpiece.
