The Epitome of Joy

I step in to my work,
A preschool--who would've thought?
And all my little friends shout my name
In unison
And hug my legs.
Regret had tried to wipe this beaming smile
Off my once-saddened face,
Yet Regret failed once again.

As I finally re-gain the ability to walk--
For it is hard to do so with sixteen
Bundles of fun holding on for dear life--
I see Happiness and we walk together,
Hand in hand.

Quick glances out of the windows
Attempt to tear me from my joy-filled world,
For I see the cold hard reality and refuse to return.
For the smallest of moments, I lose sight of Happiness.
I turn around looking in reckless abandon
For my lost friend, my comfort, my rock.
And I bump into a child--oh sweet, innocent child--
And there lies Happiness, right beside me all along.

With a child on my back, four more on my legs,
One on my left and Happiness on my right,
We walk through this land of illusion,
And we make it our reality.
I close the blinds on the windows,
And we hurry over to our fort,
Fort David they call it,
Named after me.

I climb in after Happiness,
Always holding my hand--guiding me--
And step into my new reality,
My eternal joy,
Holding Happiness close to me,
Now and forever,
And with the kids by my side.
Oh sweet, innocent kids,
What a carefree joy.
*Sigh*

Author notes

True happiness I find in the smiling, paint-covered faces of the children at the preschool I volunteer. I did the options about what gives me happiness, as well as a bit on losing happiness.
