I went to a rich preacher, famous and well known
I asked, why do you pray to the King on his thrown?
He answered, son, let me tell you what I know
God owns it all so you must ask him if you desire wealth
God is the great physician, so go to him if want health.
Certainly God owns it all and can heal my body if I call
But I do not believe God is a genie who grants my every wish
I asked a righteous man, respected and admired for his morality
I asked him why pray to the God of life and immortality?
He answered, man, let me tell you what I know
Only God knows right from wrong, obedience is the key to love
Pray to obey, pray to know what is good, pray for power from above
Certainly God expects me to obey and by myself I cannot
But is that the only reason? There seems to be something not quite right.
I went to a philosopher who had great wisdom from his birth
I asked him, why speak to the God of heaven and earth?
He answered, brother, let me tell you what I know
Your objective in prayer is not to request your desires for they are vain
You must listen to him to learn his wisdom and desire for his gain
Certainly I thought that is very true and wise
Yet, why ask if he is unchanging and already knows what he’ll do?
So, I went to child and I asked him why he talks to his dad?
He simply said, “Why not? My daddy loves me because I’m his lad.”
The child gave me the answer I needed to know
He gave me the reason why I should pray
It is simply to be with my dad that day
