The Bracelet

Missing image
I was an “Army brat” and I moved all around.
I have a string of memories and, I’ve often found,
like a beaded bracelet, with each bead a memory,
I’ve kept them close at hand to cheer and comfort me.

A tree house in Seattle was my ship upon the sea,
sandcastles on the beach in the north of Germany
where I fought the armored knights of Charlemagne
although I’m pretty sure that I didn’t know his name.

My first “communal” bath somewhere in Japan
where I first discovered that not everybody tans.
From summer nights in Ohio, catching fireflies
to the magic of my first kiss under a moonlit sky.

We had no Wii or Playstation to get in the way.
We invented our own stories as we learned to play
and found in our imaginations worlds that had no end
and that was all we needed to share with a friend.

Those days of innocence that I still can see
remind me who I am and how I came to be.
That bracelet with its beads of happy times gone by
I keep within my mind. It is my “smile supply.”

You DO seem to have ample supply of smiles, Ken. I was not an Army brat, but I was a spouse of a career Air Force man. I have very similar memories. Very well done poem with a great personal touch ... especially the last two words.
