Change

A downhill run from time embodied,
No shield or guard have we,
Against power absolute.
Has infinity or man changed most,
In the ever-onward march to fate,
In all things, reborn and death again?
For all things are its tools,
And likewise are its toys,
Do we fear it or be tossed about?
In its schemes that are not,
We could scout for an end forever,
And make excuses,
Or discern causes and read from their birth,
And make changes make us what we can be.

Author notes

Time and change are to me the absolute power, unbridled, self-guiding with no plan or brain to speak of.
Easy inspiration has a name for me, and its Change.

Very deep and honest thoughts here. I listened to a poem, read by a 98 year old farmer (you're a Texan, you must know where Friona is) up in the Texas panhandle. He was at the end of his life, but he also struggled with 'infinity' and change. I was amazed at how similar your poem is to his. He had gone on to raise a family, edit a newspaper and serve a term as the town mayor. After reading your last verses I am certain that you will go on and do something that is equally fulfilling.
