The Old Man and the Gamer Kid

Let's go out and play, I said to the gamer kid
“What shall we play?” he asked with mistrust
Thinking perhaps I had a toy or game hid

“Why our imagination, our course.” I said.
“Imagination? Is that an old-timers gaming system?”
“No, gamer kid, it's the game inside your head.”

I could see by his face he did not understand
He was not convinced, when I explain, for he thought
Surely I had something much more fun planned

Reluctantly the gamer kid ventured outside
He eyes blinked, for I guess he had never seen the sun.
For this imaginative adventure, I'd have to be the guide

Today we shall be pirates of the Indian Sea
I'll be the captain, you be the mate
We shall hunt for the famous skull key

“What key, the gamer kid asked with doubt.”
Why the key to Black Beards hidden treasure
I exclaimed in my best pirate captain shout.

“Now, hoist the sails we must be off by dawn”
“What sails? I don't see any sails or ship!
“We're standing on a green grassy lawn.”

Matey, this is not grass, this is the green sea
“Now host the sails, we must be off by day
“Raise those sails or feel cat of nine tails on thee.”

“Bah, I'm going inside to play pirates on my x-box.”
“It's too hot on this grass, er sea or whatever it is.”
So I sat alone and caught fish off my imaginary docks.

Author notes

My nephews and nieces get lost in their electronic games. Once in a while I can get them to go outside and sometimes I can get them to imagine. I hope kids never stop playing outside and using their creative imagination!

What you say is so true....
Kids today have computers I Pods X Box
Not in my day it was imagination with Barbie dolls on my moms front porch or riding my pony Star off to venture unknown...sometimes I think the older days was the best...No color tv..old time dial up phones...we lived before these things ever came along..not that they aren't good now..I would love to have a cell phone in case of emergency...it's just kids these days don't use their imagination enough
You captured it wonderfully in this poem
    Hugs n love
