Sitting on a mountaintop
looking out over a world
that is more than just
separate
from
me.
Its distant.
Even clouds that obscure
float by lower than me.
An eagle in flight
passes near
and I see
what it sees.
The wind is cool,
springing as it does
from the icy slopes
of glacier frost,
eternal and unmelting,
that lay on the slopes below.
How the hell did I get up here?
More important than that,
I see no easy way to climb down.
Maybe I'll just sit here,
unmoving as the cold stone,
until time forgets that I am even here
and birds make nests of my hair.
Eventually
hunger will consume me.
All that will be left
are my denuded bones,
picked clean by the carrion birds.
Jumbled piles of weathered bone
fading slowly
over time into dust
and rememberance.
I don't miss the world below.
It was never part of me
anyway.
I know it takes no notice
of my absence.
All that I thought had meaning,
pondered over,
came clear one day in stark realization.
The empty sky
between the stars
holds no more meaning
than the yawning chasm
within.
The skin,
the flesh,
the gentle hand,
which caressed so lovingly
left me.
The only truth is impermanence.
A fleeting moment stretches
longer than eternity
and both are just the same.
A blinking eye might miss it all.
Just
as
I
have.
But I haven't really missed a thing.

This is an awe inspiring poem that reflects the emptiness of the soul with the open spaces of the mountain tops. Powerful imagery you've employed here. All in all a well done poem. Keep your pen to the page and thanks for entering!

This is an incredibly deep poem and one that I have read twice, and will read again...you are not alone siting on the mountain top, your thoughts although your own are shared with many...you had the courage to pen them.
All the best...Sue

Wow.. you know what! I feel just like this at the moment... Stuck on some peak that I can't get off of... and not feeling part of the world.

A very thought provoking and rather sad write here. You have done a great job with some wonderful imagery, and I think many people can relate to this feeling of insignificance at different points in their lives. Nice write! I really enjoyed reading this one! Blessings, Patty

Deep and Introspective.
This has a very lonely feel to it. These moments come upon us at times of feeling lost or disillusioned. You describe the feelings well within your imagery.
The empty sky
between the stars
holds no more meaning
than the yawning chasm
within.
The skin,
the flesh,
the gentle hand,
which caressed so lovingly
left me.
There are many others on that same mountain top though too. Sometimes it is necessary to feel that remoteness, it reminds us of our need for others and the importance of love; in all its fragility, which makes it so much more beautiful.
