Winter's End

Naked branches stand tall
Against grey skies that triumph
        Over the struggling sunshine.

The shimmer of snowfall
Covers the dying grass mercifully
And the cold seeps into my veins.

Evergreens bow to honor a harsh master
And shrink in terror of the wind’s wrath
No light is shed by the dark skies

The hedge was slaughtered
When winter arrived to claim the flowers.
        Harsh branches threaten new buds.

A pure blue peeks out boldly
When the clouds dance away.
        Something like hope swells.
