My Faceless Madonna

It was written, in the beginning,
God created man in His own image.
And I see in every church I visit,
and in every person,
all humanity creating God
in their own image.
Different races,
different classes or statuses;
all create an image of God
as to how they see Him.
And I wonder just how humanity
got so sidetracked from
portraying accurately or
searching truthfully for
His real, true image.

This is where my faceless Madonna comes in.
Neither black nor white;
she's carved in shades of gray
of the hardened ash of Mt. St. Helens
from the 1980's explosion in Washington state.
It is the image, like a photograph
of one so dear, of a family member,
of one so close to God that
she carried Him for us in her womb
for nine months.

I need no face to memorize,
or an expression to move me,
nor its eyes to mesmerize me.
It is the simplicity
of the carving itself that speaks to me.
A gently bowed head, slightly angled,
and clasped hands in joy or prayer,-
as the image itself is enveloped in the
swelling folds of the mantle and the veil.
The mother gazes down lovingly
upon her children - so too, does the Father.
And we, the children, should stop to see
and meet that gaze, and greet it.
And we should smile back-
the love given us to Him return.

This is beautiful. It's true that people all over the world give God a different face, and it's also very true that this should not be where their priorities lie.

The faceless Madonna is perfect. For the use of statues is to remind us of whom we are thinking, whom we are asking to pray for us. We do not need to know exactly what they look like.

I love reading about the Blessed Virgin. She is a beautiful person, and one I love. She is a wonderful role model.

Thank you for sharing this. God bless.

    How Beautiful!

I love Mary, She's my mother. I was especially devoted to the rosary at one time. I hope to get back to it!
    A beautiful tribute to her!
    Regards,
    Jennifer

    Hello Jenny

Came here to read your poem at your request - the poem is well written and flows great as well - It is against my faith to have any idols so I won't comment on the content - you are right that people want and do try to mold God into thier image - but God can not be molded - even saying something like "God Bless America" is a form of moulding - God does not snap to attention at our request - we would do better by saying "Bless God America" - Bless God - Joe (Dobar Dan)

    Well, I tend ...

to look at things from a leftist position myself, so I didn't feel this was "left-oriented" at all. To me, it's remarkably centrist.

That aside, you've done a good job with this, and I see nothing that you should really consider changing.

This really delves into honest faith and love
for humanity. I feel the perspective you take
this from is sincere and should be looked at
by any and all who feel disconnected from the
divine or physical circles of support.
Excellent piece that Marion is sure to love.

That is very good! I agree that humanity is always trying to create a God that will suit their needs, rather than rely on a God that will meet their needs. We as a race of beings need to understand that God created us, and loves us; we should stop trying so hard to mold him into something else. Great writing.
