Unmask Yourself

I want to see
what you are made of.

Don’t leave me to guess
or follow allusions
of what I want you to be.

Show me
the joy that lingers
deep within you.

Let the sun shine of your soul
burn off the obscuring fog
that I may behold your varied flowers
in the iridescent splendor that is you.

I know you are afraid.
I am to.

No one crosses a river
without overcoming dread.
.
It will be easier
if we cross together.

With such courage
I will show you me
and you can show me you.

I've held a contest about "masks" and the reasons why people hide behind masks... so this poem speaks right to me. I've seen here on AP, and in my daily life, how people wear different masks for different situations but I always wonder who is really inside or behind... intruging subject. In love there can be no masks... and you're so right, it takes courage to become open and vulnerable, but without that, there is no future, no love. Loved this one, Jeff.

  • I love this. It's stunningly simple and powerful at the same time.

This is really a good poem. What impresses me is the masculine intonation as far as the directness and the willingness to take control. Yet there is still the realization that a softness must be used to instill confidence in the relationship. Original and well done!

  • wonderful! yes, true love is found in two individuals, complete, learning, accepting and loving each other how they are, not fitting into a preconcieved vision or dream.
    Thank you for your entry!

This is a most splendid poem. I promise you if you show it to some chick you're seriously interested in you will score major points. Joling aside, the verse "Let the sun shine of your soul/burn off the obscuring fog/that I may behold your varied flowers/in the iridescent splendor that is you" is beautifully penned. Good luck in the contest!
