In the summer when black tar streets
Turn the heat into liquid jazz
Hot cats dance with sizzling bare feet
To the rhythm, the razz-ma-tazz.
In the afternoon’s burning heart
Kids turn the hydrants on to spray,
Cool relief playing its part,
Chasing the edge of heat away.
Doo-wop-a doo jazz drops heels,
The tap-a-tap of dancing shoes
Sound summer rhythm, heat reveals,
Bunny hops of hot bunny blues.
In the evening when night crawls back
Stars scintillating in the sky,
Heat melts into a smooth black sack
Jazz slides into a soothing sigh.
Crickets maintain their beat at night
Riffs calling to possible mates,
The moon smiles with all its might
Stars dance romance for the primates.
Summer jazz, tap-taps the dark hollows
When sun returns to heat the land,
Daylight tugs at night, and swallows,
Sun extends its fiery hand.
Tappity-tap the warming walk,
Pick up the rhythm of the beat.
Waking, the rising people balk
At going out into the heat.

This series of contests has already been worth the points, I have three brilliant new to me poets to read. Thanks for the wonderful entries and we both hope we will see a lot more from you through the series.

I like this, the rhythms are great, evoking music and dance, celebration of life and heat. Loved /jazz melts into a smooth black sack/
