Blue Dress

You wore a light blue dress
It was such a pretty shade
I remember sitting on your knee
safe and unafraid

The blue dress had a silver zip
With a hoop so big and round
I played with it for ages
And I never made a sound

I remember your blue dress
Your safe and warm embrace
I can close my eyes and see myself
Looking upon your face

You remember that blue dress
Which you bought at David Jones
You smile at me and say
"Oh yes, they had the nicest clothes'

So now I am much older
And we are such great friends
But I will always remember you
In that pretty light blue dress

Author notes

Images of my mother in a particular blue dress is one that I often see when I try to think back to my earliest childhood. I really loved that dress and I can picture it exactly in my mind. I particularly loved the zip, I really did spend hours playing with the big silver hoop attached to it.

I showed my Mum this poem on Mothers Day she laughed and said, "Oh yes, whenever I wore it when I picked you up from school, you'd run out and say 'Mummy I love that dress' evertime!" I don't remember that.
