Collage of motherhood's images
drift through the mind,
all the fantasies, flawless and perfect,
before news came
that it was no longer a someday
on a calendar of hopes yet to be,
maternity months on alarm clock
steadily ticking towards parenthood.
Husband fails as mind reader,
but at least have reason to shop
for new clothes,
don't have to worry about diets,
though scales are unkind.
Interlude between conception
and delivery
a journey, personal and unique,
anticipation blends with anxiety
in a language that no man seems to speak.
World keeps changing,
nothing seems the same,
expect for one's sense
of being stable and unaffected
though others roll eyes
when the smallest problem
produces need for intense reaction,
new moments come
with constant surprises both good and bad.
Little life within
reminds of presence with feet and hands
doing their boxer's exercises.
They call it expecting,
but so full of unexpected seconds
while waiting upon a mother's dream.
