My Elizabeth

My heart knew it so well
The moment I laid eyes on you
That you would be mine
And I would be yours too

My mind took a little while
To realise the truth
And for a while I insisted upon
Being so proud and aloof

To not understand the frailties
Of family and kin
Almost cost me the chance
Of your precious heart to win

Your character so upstanding
In the face of such despair
The agony of shame
That was so much for you to bear

Oh Elizabeth the pride
I felt in you that day
Took away pride in myself
That had made my life so gray

The day I realised
That my family was so crude
The aunt so full or arrogance
Was a wake up 'oh so rude

I cannot express the feeling
The turning point in my life
When I took a chance and humbled myself
And asked you to be my wife

Author notes

This was written on the spur of the moment as soon as I saw this comp. My love of Jane Austen knows no end and Pride and Prejudice is permanently beside my bed. Please re-read before judging as I may be back to tweak it every chance I get. Whether I win or lose, makes no diffence, I am honoured to write about my favourite book.

I agree with frownsnfreckles, Jane Austen gives her characters such strength and growth throughout her books. And I believe that is one of the reasons why so many people are drawn to her books.
You where also able to convey that strength and that growth the way I believe Jane Austen herself would have liked. You show the emotion of love as well, in it as being a way to grow and realize how stronge someone is.
    Great job!

yes, it was the inner strength of her characters that gave such depth to her writing.
