My Little Brown Friend

My little brown friend sitting on black-speckled eggs in the nest you wove
Sing me the song your journeys from your stolen abode
Sing the song of flying in love at first sight
Of meeting your gray-crowned husband
whose throat is black as the night

Sing me the song of your travels abroad,
the decrease of winged friends in Europe
Pray tell me, what is the cause?
How can we blame you?
We brought you here
to control the pesty insects
some people hate and fear

Sing me the song of flying
over hill and dale
of the seeds you eat
and the grain crops
you are said to make fail

The yellow flowers in my garden seem to be one of
your favorite treats
My little brown friend
I forgive you
since your song is so sweet

  • Informative and Gracious

Magic Lady, Thank you so much for the bronze.
I was honored to be in such a fun informative contest! I never knew the story of the 5 birds sold for 2 pennies.
I was pleasantly surprised when I logged in today and saw a bronze trophy on my page!
    Brightest Blessings,
    Angellightwolf

I like your take on the sparrow; how you took her from sitting on the eggs to traveling abroad. I like all the references to the sparrow in the Bible.
Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten in God's sight. But even the hairs of your head are all counted. Do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows. Luke 12:6-7
    That one in particular.

Thank you for your sweet poem for the contest.
    Cheryl

  • This is a beautiful poem, lyrical and informative. Well Done!

  • It is hard to see how some people think of this little song bird as a pest. Here in Western Maryland they are among the most numerous of our singing birds. I love to hear their sweet song.
