Memories of Music

Hush, Hush, Somebody's calling my name
It's a voice I can still hear from youngest years
Singing me to sleep with Puff the Magic Dragon
Adventuring Lil'Jackie paper and his rascal scaly friend
Wishing I could visit Honah Lee in autumn mist by the sea
Drifting happily snug under warm blankets away from fears

Singing to me to let me know everything's alright
Before I knew she was out of key sometimes
Yet I never cared because I know she cared so kind
So much more about me than most things in life
Softly, gently, lyrics floating down like love
After so much excitement and learning of day and now unwind

Winken Blinken and Nodd sailing off in a Milky Way sea
Casting nets all three to capture the moon for you and me
First glimpses of how high flung and imagination grinned
Knowing how far up my dreams could go in the music
Jazz and folk tunes my earliest memories of melodies
Hugged close to her chest singing Summertime of Gershwin

And living's never too easy but one of these mornings
After such a restful peaceful sleep echoes of song
Rose up singing and winging my way on my own
Spread my wings daring to dream while waking hours
Took to the sky with dad and mom standing proudly by
Precious memories now as I grow older away from home

Dad's headphones with Louie Armstrong's velvet voice on tummy
Iron Butterfly to my mom's chagrin but she played along
Rhythm of life in gift of music before born that keep me strong alone
Imagination eye's wild and free to see and hear
Pirate ships lowering flags when Puff roars out his name
As one evening I'll be singing to wee 'uns of my own'

Love ya Mom, ya done good raising me to independent be

PS don't ever say I don't listen, coz you sang me 4 Strong Winds too
and now I know what Peter Paul & Mary were talking about
I eventually moved out to Alberta for work in the fall
and those winds sure blow cold way out there, but I'll be back some day soon!

Author notes

kinda brought a few tears of happiness to my eyes i admit
just thinking of how she sang to me all those nights
how she now sings to other wee'uns when she gets a chance
thanks for a wonderful idea for a contest topic. cheers
