Childhood Bliss

Missing image
Lazy days, crazy days;
lying in the sun days.
Chasing games, hiding games.
Play pretend and nicknames.
Keepsake treasures,
childhood pleasures.

Sack races, secret places.
Climbing trees with grubby faces.
Late to bed and early rises.
Grandpa’s visit; nice surprises
Grandma’s kiss,
childhood bliss.

Scrapbook snips, seaside trips.
Orange peel and apple pips.
Candy-floss; sticky hands.
Stripy deck-chairs, village bands.
Day’s sublime;
summertime.

    The stripey chairs could almost pass for some sort of modern art exhibit. I remember in California some years back they put up all these brightly colored umbrellas out in the mountains north of L.A. I think there were 1000 of them. They were quite huge, several meters high and weighed a ton or better if I recall. It was some Japanese guy's expression of art. They had paths so you could walk among them. One day the winds picked up, tipped one over and it ended up killing some lady. The art exhibit came down very soon thereafter! At least with deck chairs the worst that will happen is it will get wedged to your buttocks or pinch your ankle.

    More nice verse,

    Jim

    Another great piece. The rhyming was great, and you used an interesting rhyme scheme I've never seen before (one that looks rather difficult.) While working on the technical aspect of the poem, you never let the idea of the poem get lost and painted a vivid picture of the joys of summer, especially as a child. I'm on my way to go read another one of your poems.

  • A beautiful poem remembering all those days as a child when life seemed a lot less complicated and a lot more fun. Thank you for sharing this with us and making us wish we could go back to those times.

    This is lovely, very well rhymed and, although it paints a rosy and sentimental picture of childhood, it is entirely delightful. I enjoyed this immensely.
