Vigyânânanda - Mâ's Flying Hermit (Metered Mirror Rhyme)

My friend dwells in the holy Himalayas
surrounded by the peace of snow-capped peaks
he meditates in presence of the Great Ones
detachment from the mundane world he seeks

While contemplating soothing sound of silence
one-pointedness in spirit he achieves
his body firmly posed in yogic posture
from Maya’s snare his senses he retrieves

A flying hermit he is called by many
immortal wisdom through his teaching flows
by Mâ Anândamayi's inspiration
illuminated blessings he bestows

Abundant is his bliss, his joy contagious
his smile enlightens weary candle’s flame
I bow to you, belovčd spirit-brother
Vigyânânanda, blessčd be thy name

Author notes

for my spiritual brother vigyanananda (doctor jacques vigne), an ex-psychiatrist who has left france around 20 years ago, in order to live a life of reclusion in india ...

he resides in the hermitage of the ashram of the venerated saint sri ma anandamayi in dhaulchina, close to almora, in the himalayas ...

he leaves india every 6 years or so to come to france in order to speak of his spiritual experience and to share his wisdom ...

today, on my birthday, he is expected here in our house for a satsang (spiritual gathering) ... I am so honored and blessed ...

My, what a beautiful way to celebrate your birthday, surrounded by the ones you love, admire, and find wisdom from. Your mirrored metered rhyme, added the softness necessary for this tribute to your friend. Without hearing you read this one, I can hear in my mind's ear, how it would sound. Beautiful entry.

  • Very nice. I like this style. You wrote a wonderful tribute to this holy hermit. I want to know more about him, and will go to the sites that you refer the reader to about him.

Your poem makes me think about how I wanted to join a monastery when I was a teenager. I have been wondering the last few days, if that would have been the wiser choice in my life. In my case, I was planning on becoming a nun. It may have been my only road out of the dysfunction that I was born into. Easy to look back in retrospect. I guess, one reason I didn't, was I wanted to experience life at it's fullest and not run away from it.

I do think, however, that Sunnyasi is the ultimate answer. I am just trying to figure out how I am going to do it. I know there are many roads to enlightenment, but I have always thought that holy hermitage is the ultimate and superior one.
  • What perfect use for this form, a poem this subdued and tranquil is in itself almost like a calm reflection upon a mirrored lake. I can see this cantest is not going to be easy in any way to judge. Thank you for your entry and best wishes in the contest

  • Your gentle happiness
    radiates from the page
    on this joyous occasion.
    May your words continue
    to bring the readers
    these spiritual experiences.

Maa, may you be forever blessed.

  • Beautifully creative and artistic with your own developed form. You know, I did consider writing one of these for this contest as I love its value with the mirrored lines.

Superb my friend. An absolutely wonderful entry. ~Pamela

oh, you are great at those !!!
I still remember the wonderful ones you wrote a loooooooooooooong time ago ...
even if I haven't really "invented" this form, since it's just a palindrome with added meter and rhyme, I guess it's okay to still call it metered mirror rhyme ... what do you think ?

I'm getting a bit lazy to follow my own original suggestions of iambic tetrameter and interlocking rhyme-scheme ... but probably it's okay to disobey our own rules ...

will go and discover your own entry for this final round now ...

  • Your rhyme is divine, filled with feeling and appealing to the senses. A terrific tribute to your spiritual brother, who will utter words of wisdom for gracing him with this (sort of) hymn

      dearest nicky,

thank you for your wonderful words and presence on this page ... it means a lot to me ... since I have already found your turning pages on the pages of some of my favorite poets ...

concerning jacques uttering words of wisdom in return for this humble verse, he actually said that I was idealizing him ... (I swear I didn't ) ...

this morning, after his satsang in our puja-room, the whole house still seemed to radiate with joy and light ...

for me, there is no greater proof of "realization" than one who does not leave footsteps behind, but whose perfume spreads far beyond graspable ...

thank you so much for listening, dear one ...

This is inspiring in so many ways:
the voice, the tribute, the imagery of place
    without time or interference...
the beautiful form so original that sets it
to rhythm and repeats the message strong.
You make me visualize this life without
expectation or demand. Truly a woven tapestry
of peace, enlightenment, and deep friendship.

I think you'd be the last person in the world to need a psychiatrist...
Your tribute is wonderful, and wonderful is the way you see people.
I admire those who can live a reclusive life in meditation. I can only stay quiet when I sleep.

I sent a bird to wish you a happy birthday, but want to say again

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY enlightened one

you are such a sweet yemanja ...
even if I can't see any enlightenment wherever I look ...
and even less in this silly lil girl here ...
they probably don't accept foreigners at "enlightenment", I guess !

      dear brother,

this small "maa" feels honored that you have added your voice to her humble poem about the big "Maa" and her messenger vigyanandaji ...

I just love allpoetry for bringing people together ...

  • Blessed are the both of you indeed [for knowing each other] All of us could so benefit from someone that has followed that which called him and left all else behind to live that life of re[seclusion] and therewith find his inner most self and all that it takes [how little that is-but how much enrichment it brings] I am sure he will be so honoured by this.

on another note...happy, happy Birthday ma chere petite soeur. May your heart sing with joy [and assuming Durga has flown to freedom by now] may you always know that she / he is special , as that white chest feather indicates and the touch of you added to that. May your spirit fly with Durga, may you both know that you are of each other in a very special way,
    much love
