When October spills
Across the ice
And wind sweeps high
The wild whooping cranes fly.
In the far South
When April showers
Bring May flowers
Young chicks say goodby
The wild whooping cranes fly.
Happy Birthday Marion !
Author notes
The male crane in upper left corner of the photo is the oldest in the world; "Hoss" is 30 years old. In November of 2003, he and his lifelong mate "Lady" brought not only one but two bundles of joy to the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, creating a lot of magic in Texas. Only three times in history has a pair arrived with twins. The twins were born in May in Wood Buffalo National Park in Canada. Named after the Lobstick Marshes.
I got to see this pair of twins and parents when I was in Texas during 2003. I met the photographer, Diane Loyd who took this wonderful photo.
I hope you enjoy this poem just a tiny bit as much as I did your poem.

Although I've never seen a whooping crane I've been priviledged to see many of their next to kin. They are simply magnificent birds to watch. As always, your presentations are enjoyable to read and educational.
Sincerely,
Leo Long

a gift of the heart
Your gift of what you love is meaningful, thank you for creating this gem of nature and poetry.
The migration of birds is a miracle, and so is the birth of new members to an endangered species. We must remember the dedicated people who have moved governments to protect the whooping crane.
Thank you for your thoughtful entry.

Wonderful picture
This is a wonderful picture you have used to illustrate your poem. You have brought to mind the changing of the seasons and how if we wait, this time will be gone, only to come again in a new way next year. You oldest crane is something of a marvel. And to be able to see him and his twins must have been something very special. Thank you for this poem.
