During the night I hear a howl
of a grey wolf somewhere near by
It sounds like cries of agony
I began to imagine why
Does he cry for a mate that's lost
or for another wolf that's ill
Does he cry for hunger of his young
or does he just cry at will
Lonely he sounds howling at the moon
as he silhouettes near the sky
Standing alone on mountain top
he wails and howls and cries
Howling in the wind he cries
alone and free if by will
My heart goes out to him tonight
hoping his mate will return to him still
